Bakrid is an annual festival commemorated by the Muslim community all over the globe. This festival is also called the “Festival of Sacrifice.” This year, in 2024, Bakrid, falls on June 17, Monday.
Bakrid celebrates the sacrifice made by the Prophet Ibrahim to his son. The sacrifice marked the conclusion of the Hajj pilgrimage in Mecca.
On this day, meat is distributed among relatives. Bakrid is also popularly known as Eid al-Adha, and falls on the tenth day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
History
Bakrid celebrates the tale of Prophet Ibrahim sacrificing his son to Allah. As per the belief, Allah appeared in Ibrahim’s dream and asked him to appear for a test of faith. It could only be done by sacrificing his son.
Hence, Ibrahim informed him about Allah’s command to his son. Satan also tried to dissuade him. However, Ibrahim threw stones at him.
While sacrificing his son, Ibrahim blindfolded himself. When Ibrahim was about to kill his son, Allah appeared. Allah unveiled that Ibrahim passed the test and the sacrifice had been fulfilled.
Bakrid Celebration
The entire Muslim community commemorates the festival, Eid al-Adha, by offering special prayers. On this auspicious day, greetings and gifts are exchanged. Moreover, in India, Bakrid is regarded as a gazetted holiday.
Bakrid is also popularly known as Bakr-Id, Id-ul-Zuha, the festival of sacrifice, and Id-ul-Adha.
Bakrid is celebrated by the muslim community by offering goats to the God, submitting to special prayers and wearing new dresses. The meat is also distributed among friends, family and relatives.
Bakrid signifies compassion, charity, and sacrifice. Moreover, it also strengthens the bonds with friends and the community. Bakrid encourages supporting those people who are in need and also promotes forgiveness.
