The auspicious festival of Hanuman Jayanti will be observed on 23 April 2024. It is the day when devotees pay tribute to Lord Hanuman. It is his birth anniversary. It should be noted that it is observed twice a year on Krishna Paksh or say Narak Chaturdashi in the northern region and Chaitra Poornima in the southern region of India.
Lord Hanuman was born on the day of Chaitra Poornima i.e. full day in Chaitra month. That is why it is celebrated on full moon day. However, there is also a tradition of celebrating Hanuman Jayanti in Kartik Chaturdashi i.e. 14th day in the month of Kartik of Krishna Paksh. This is so because on this day Maa Sita bestowed the boon of immortality to Hanuman.
In simple language, one day is celebrated as his birth anniversary while the other day is celebrated as the time when he achieved the status of being regarded as a divine entity.
According to Maharishi Valmiki, people around northern India observe Hanuman Jayanti on Krishna Paksha Chaturdashi during the month of Kartika. According to old legends, Lord Shiva himself manifested as Hanuman and was born to Anjana.
Later, he went on to become the most devoted bhakt of Lord Ram, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Since then, he acted as his guide and helper. He even helped Lord Ram in defeating Ravana and reuniting with Sita.
In the time of Kalyuga, Lord Hanuman is the most respected deity. Devotees worship him in many different ways as he is seen as the most pure because he followed the path of celibacy. Devotees on this day observe fast and offer their respect to him. Many like to maintain celibacy.
