Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh was born on 28 September 1907 in the Lyallpur district of Punjab. He was one of the great revolutionaries of the Indian freedom struggle who dedicated his life towards the freedom of the country in his youth itself. Today, on his birth anniversary, we pay tribute to him and remember his unique contribution.
Bhagat Singh’s family was an Arya Samaji Sikh family. Patriotism was directly associated with it. His father Kishan Singh and mother Vidyavati inspired him to serve the country. Bhagat Singh received his early education from the government school of Banga village and then joined Gayanand Anglo Vedic (DAV) College in Lahore. Here his ideology and love for the country deepened.
Bhagat Singh started his revolutionary life in 1923, when he joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA). He gave the slogan of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’, which filled the countrymen with enthusiasm. His ideas infused new energy into the freedom struggle.
Bhagat Singh’s life completely changed when Lala Lajpat Rai fell a victim to police brutality. His death took Bhagat Singh to the path of vengeance. He killed John P. Sanders who was responsible for the incident. This act made him a hero of revolutionary sagas.
One of the earliest among those who were arrested in 1928 was Bhagat Singh, who was tried in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. He along with Rajguru and Sukhdev was hanged on 23rd March 1931. His martyrdom gave a new direction to the Indian freedom struggle and he became known as Shaheed-e-Azam.
Bhagat Singh adopted the principles of socialism, communism, and anarchism and the dream he had of a society where both the money and the resources are equally divided. It still inspires people in their lives.
Even 77 years after India’s independence, Bhagat Singh’s slogan ‘Sarfaroshi ki tamanna’ fills the youth with passion for patriotism. Bhagat Singh’s whole life is an inspiration, and on his birthday, we promise to pursue his ideals in our lives.
Special programmes are conducted in educational institutions on the birth anniversary of Bhagat Singh throughout the country. It is important that the young minds of this generation remember his thoughts and sacrifices while paying tributes to him.
Our martyr Bhagat Singh has given us the lesson that freedom movement for the country is the ultimate duty. His life, thoughts, and sacrifice motivate us to serve our country further ahead to materialize his dreams in reality. On this day, we pay homage to him and pray to realize his ideals in our life.
