
26 November is observed as Constitution Day in India. On this day lies the symbol of Indian democracy and its principles. The Constitution of India was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949. It was implemented in formal terms on 26 January 1950, which became India’s Republic Day.
The celebration of Constituent Day was announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the year 2015 on the occasion of the 125th birth anniversary of Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. It is a purpose, aiming to make citizens aware of the importance of the Constitution and its fundamental principles.
It took 2 years, 11 months and 18 days to prepare the Indian Constitution. A total of 166 meetings were held in this process. The work of constitution making was done by the Indian Constituent Assembly, which had 299 members. These included 229 Indian representatives and 70 representatives of British India.
Keeping in mind the diversity and complexities of Indian society, the Constituent Assembly prepared such a document that provides equality, freedom and justice to every citizen of the country. In this process, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar formed the draft committee of the Constituent Assembly.
After the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949 it took time to formally implement it. In this time, the provisions of the Constitution were explained and its translation from English to Hindi was propogated.
This day has hitherto been celebrated as “Law Day”. It became known as “Constitution Day” after 2015.
The Indian Constitution is the most detailed written constitution in the world. It was drafted under the leadership of “Chief Architect” Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Initially, it had 395 articles, 22 parts and 8 schedules. Currently, after amendments, it has 448 articles, 25 parts and 12 schedules.
The Constitution aims to establish India as a secular, socialist, and democratic republic. In detail, it defines the fundamental rights and duties of citizens.
The principal reason behind the celebration of Constitution Day is to spread awareness among citizens of their rights and duties. This day is dedicated to paying tribute to the Constitution maker, Dr. Ambedkar, and strengthening the foundation of Indian democracy.
