World Soil Day is observed annually on 5 December. The importance of healthy soil and its sustainable management is the primary goal that it focuses on. Awareness about the role of soil management in biodiversity of soils, improvement of health status, prevention of erosion and pollution, increase in purification and storage capacity of water, and strengthening of sustainable agricultural food systems is done. It also highlights the role of soil in carbon sequestration, which forms an important aspect of battling climate change.
Soil Day was first initiated by the International Union of Soil Sciences (IUSS) in 2002. The idea was advanced with the support of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand. In 2013, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) identified it as a global awareness platform and the United Nations General Assembly officially accepted it in its 68th session. World Soil Day was first observed on 5 December 2014.
5 December is the birthday of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has devoted his life to soil management. In his memory, the day was formally bestowed upon him in 2016 when he died at the age of 70 years.
World Soil Day 2024 Theme
This year, the focus theme of World Soil Day is “Soil Conservation: Measurement, Monitoring, Management”. This focuses on how accurate soil data and information help in understanding the character of soil and makes decision-making for sustainable soil management more informed. Proper management of soil not only leads to food security but also plays a role in tackling climate change and meeting the Sustainable Development Goals.
In 2024, World Soil Day will be commemorated worldwide for the tenth time. It is hosted by Thailand, and for the first time, the event will be held outside the FAO headquarters. In addition, it coincides with the 16th session of the UNCCD (United Nations Conference on Desertification), which will be convened in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia during 2-16 December 2024.
The event will be broadcast live to ensure global participation and awareness. This year’s special occasion will provide a unique opportunity to highlight soil as a vital resource for life and inspire global commitment to its sustainable management.
Today, soil and pollution are deteriorating in quality, thus reducing its productivity. The soil has been damaged through industrial activities, uncontrolled urbanization, and overuse of chemical fertilizers. Soil conservation is an imperative for sustainable development and food security.
There are several initiatives being led by FAO and the Global Soil Partnership (GSP), which focus on soil health improvement and sustainable management. Soil conservation is not just a national responsibility, but it is a global priority. All countries will have to work together for this.
