Among the most common traditions made on New Year’s Day are making New Year’s resolutions. Resolutions include how one should enhance personal life as well as their professional life. Common resolutions range from losing weight to getting into healthier habits and working harder. The origin of this tradition can be traced back to ancient Rome, where promises to the gods were made at the start of a new year in hopes of enhancing lives. Now this resolution is not only religious but is considered as a personal improvement.
Major cities in India such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai organize big live concerts on New Year’s Day, featuring Bollywood stars and other famous personalities. These events are attended by huge crowds, while some people prefer to celebrate it peacefully with their family and friends.
It’s very ancient history concerning the New Year’s Day celebration. This tradition, started to begin with by celebrating January 1 as the New Year, dates back when Roman Emperor Julius Caesar marked about 45 BC. According to his statement, he decided to name the first month of the calendar after the god Janus, which was in charge of all beginnings and changes. So January became the new year.
In the calendar, Pope Gregory XIII had officially recognized this day to be the New Year in the 16th century. After that, the Gregorian calendar began to be followed all over the world, and January 1 was begun to be celebrated as the first day of the New Year.
This celebration of New Year in India on January 1 is believed to have started in the British period. Still, its popularity increased during the 1940s. Different Indian communities celebrate New Year at different times according to their traditional calendars, including at the time of Diwali according to the Hindu calendar, or according to other ethnic and religious calendars. However, most parts of the country follow the Gregorian calendar and New Year’s celebration is widely followed on January 1.
