Indian Republic Day is a significant occasion in India, celebrated with great enthusiasm and pride on January 26th each year. In 2025, India will mark its 76th Republic Day. This day commemorates the enforcement of the Indian Constitution and the establishment of India as a sovereign democratic republic. Various cultural programs, parades, and flag-hoisting ceremonies are organized across the country, with the main event in New Delhi standing out for its grandeur.
On January 26, 1930, during the Indian freedom struggle, the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj. Keeping this historic date in mind, the Indian Constitution was enacted on January 26, 1950. Although India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, the country did not have its own constitution until then. The governance was primarily based on the Government of India Act of 1935. A drafting committee was established on August 29, 1947, chaired by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, to create the Constitution.
The drafting process took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days, culminating in the adoption of the Constitution on November 26, 1949, and its official enforcement on January 26, 1950. On this day, Dr Rajendra Prasad took the oath as the first President of India and raised the tricolour flag. The inaugural Republic Day celebration took place at Irwin Stadium (now National Stadium) in Delhi, featuring participation from the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force in the parade.
The main event of the Republic Day celebration occurs on Kartavya Path (formerly Rajpath) in New Delhi. The festivities begin with the Prime Minister laying a wreath at the Amar Jawan Jyoti, honouring the martyrs. This is followed by the national flag hoisting and the singing of the national anthem, accompanied by a 21-gun salute. The President then inspects the parade, which highlights the strength and diversity of the Indian Armed Forces.
