India will celebrate its 76th Republic Day on 26 January 2025. This day commemorates the anniversary of the Indian Constitution coming into effect on 26 January 1950. The celebration serves to honour India’s journey toward becoming a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. India gained independence on 15 August 1947, but prior to that, the country operated under the Government of India Act 1935. On 29 August 1947, a drafting committee was established, led by Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, to create the Indian Constitution. This endeavour took 2 years, 11 months, and 18 days to complete. Ultimately, the Constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 26 November 1949 and officially came into force on 26 January 1950.
The choice of 26 January is significant as it marks the day in 1930 when the Indian National Congress passed the resolution for Poorna Swaraj (complete independence) during the Lahore session. This date holds a special place in India’s history and is celebrated as Republic Day.
